The Business of Dental Transitions

Dentistry is a clinical profession, yes—but ignore the business side, and you risk burnout, missed opportunities, or financial hardship. Whether you’re just starting out or preparing to sell, every major turning point in your dental journey is a business decision. And too many of us were never taught that.

Dentistry Isn’t Just Drill and Fill—It’s Strategy and Vision

From the day you open your doors to the day you hand over the keys, your career in dentistry will hinge on a series of transitions:

  • Starting or buying a practice
  • Hiring associates or staff
  • Bringing in a partner
  • Expanding or relocating
  • Selling or retiring

Each one of these steps involves more than just paperwork—they involve judgment, negotiation, vision, and timing. And unfortunately, far too many dentists are either caught off guard or hand over control to brokers or DSOs who don’t have their best interests in mind.

Transitions Require More Than a Contract—They Require Clarity

If you’re buying, selling, or hiring, you need more than a signed document. You need:

  • Transparent conversations
  • Aligned expectations
  • Respect between both parties

This is why I started Dental Practice Matchmaker—to give control back to dentists. Whether you’re looking to buy, sell, hire, or be hired, our community and member platform help you connect directly—no middleman taking a cut or steering the deal off-course.

The Most Successful Dentists Understand This One Thing

The dentists who thrive aren’t necessarily the best clinicians—they’re the ones who understand the business side. They know how to evaluate production and collections. They know how to hire the right associate. They know when it’s time to sell and how to do it smartly.

If you’re navigating a transition right now—or know one is coming—take time to educate yourself. And make sure you’re connecting with others who’ve been through it before.

Founder of Dental Practice Matchmaker

Dr. Jorgensen has worked in dentistry since 1984, and has been a dentist since 1992. She has worked as a dentist, dental hygienist, dental assistant, and dental receptionist in private practices, public health, and corporate offices.

She started  a practice from scratch in 1994, moved that practice twice, and started a second office.

During her career she has hired eight associates, and has been through the selling and buying process several times. If you have a problem in dentistry, she has seen it and solved it.
